Digital to Unveil Juiced-Up Machines: Trying to stimulate sluggish computer sales, Digital Equipment Corp. next week will unveil a line of juiced-up machines in what the company calls one of its most important product announcements in years. But analysts say this is a precursor to the really big news within the next couple of years when DEC is expected to completely remake its trademark VAX computers. Digital, based in Maynard, Mass., is now working on a new generation of VAX machines based on a RISC system. The project, code-named “Alpha,” is expected to yield new machines in the next 18 months.
