Claremont : Roller Hockey Approved

A roller hockey program for local children, including a competitive league, received the go-ahead from the City Council on Tuesday.

The proposal to add the relatively new sport to the city’s athletic programs came after council members suggested that the city find more activities for 9- to 14-year-olds.

Because roller hockey, which is played on the popular in-line skates, can be a high-risk sport, the council directed that the program have adequate insurance provisions, as well as a liability waiver.

The city would also require competitors to buy and use extensive safety equipment, including helmet, mouth guard and protective pads. Players would also have to pay a $35 fee.

The city is considering converting a seldom-used tennis court at Wheeler Park into a rink for practice and games for two 12-week seasons a year.

The city estimates the program’s start-up costs at about $9,000.
