Covina : City Won’t Seek Pool Grant

Share

The dilapidated city pools at Covina Park, which have been closed for two years, may remain so indefinitely after the City Council voted 3 to 1 not to apply for a state grant for the repairs. The city said it could not provide the necessary matching funds.

Councilman Gary Coffey cast the dissenting vote Monday, saying the city has nothing to lose by applying. Councilman Tom O’Leary was absent. The council decided to seek community financial support and wait until next year to reapply for the grant.

Under the application process, the city would pay the full bill to repair the 71-year-old Covina Plunge, and the state would reimburse the city up to 50%.

The original Olympic-size pool was built in 1920, but was divided into two pools in 1976. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department estimated that it will cost $630,000 to rehabilitate the pools, whose problems include cracks and faulty piping and filtering systems.
