WHITEY’S LAW: Why does Angels exec Whitey Herzog, above, like this year’s World Series? Because it involves two teams that went from worst to first. The Angels this season accomplished half of that, finishing last in the American League West, 14 games behind Minnesota’s Twins. “I went from 26 games out one year with St. Louis to the pennant,” Herzog notes. . . . But the Halos may try it without Dave Winfield and Bert Blyleven, who were cleared Wednesday to become free agents. The Dodgers, meanwhile, began a purge of veterans by saying they wouldn’t try to re-sign Juan Samuel, Alfredo Griffin and Gary Carter (C1).
