Magazines Oppose California Tax: Weider Publications, a leading health-and-fitness publisher, has launched a campaign aimed at rescinding California’s sales tax on magazines and newspapers. The tax, which went into effect July 15, was approved by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Pete Wilson in an attempt to help close the state’s $14.3-billion budget deficit. Executives at Weider, whose parent company is based in Woodland Hills, are calling for the publishing industry to move sales meetings and conventions out of the state to pressure the governor into canceling the tax. A similar campaign helped turn back a Florida tax in the 1980s.
