Red Cross Honors Its Volunteers

Vivian Engelbrecht of Anaheim, with 55 years of volunteer service for the American Red Cross, led the list of honorees at the local chapter’s service-recognition ceremony at the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace in Yorba Linda.

Others recognized were Gladys Fried of Santa Ana, with 50 years; Emily Mahler of Brea, 45 years; Jo Hall of Anaheim and Lillian Greenhill of Laguna Niguel, both with 40 years, and Betty Morr of Huntington Beach, 35 years.

Frederick Johnson of Fullerton was named Outstanding Blood Program Volunteer Donor of the Year; Sharon Paisley of Santa Ana was recognized for her work with the 1981 Kids Care Fair, and Tim Leach of Irvine was presented a special award for his work with “STATS,” (Students Teaching AIDS To Students), a program that trained medical students to speak about AIDS prevention.

Golden Circle Awards, the highest honor given for outstanding volunteer achievement, were presented to Francine Frank and Florence Hall, both of Anaheim; Cyndi Vaughn, Long Beach; Robert Morrison, Santa Ana; Mike Mann, Irvine; Sasha Thurman, Huntington Beach, and Judith Tuohey, Laguna Hills.

Donald Karcher, former chairman of the Orange County chapter’s board of directors, received the Clara Barton Honor Award for Meritorious Volunteer Leadership.

Cypress College’s recent Seventh Annual Foundation Golf Classic at Anaheim Hills Golf Course raised $18,000 for student scholarships, $6,000 more than last year’s record, according to Dr. Don Bedard, foundation director.

Kevin Hollon, 11, of Yorba Linda, grand champion of the Denver “Capcom Presents ‘The Disney Afternoon’ Video Game PlayTour,” will compete in the finals at Disneyland Nov. 7-10, hoping to win the grand prize of a Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Kevin earlier competed in PlayTour contests in Santa Ana, Glendale and San Francisco but failed to win. His parents offered him an early Christmas present, a trip to the Denver contest.

The sixth-grader played the “Tale Spin” video game to win the Denver event.

Newport Beach resident Larry P. Rodberg, president and chief executive officer of Costa Mesa-based Eden Air Freight Inc., was named Cargo Executive of the Year by Air Cargo World, a trade magazine published in Atlanta.

Stanton resident Doug Munsey has been elected president of the 60-member Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim.

Marceline A. Mulville and Dr. Royce Hutain have been named winners of the North Orange County Family YMCA’s Man and Woman of the Year Humanitarian Award. They will be honored Nov. 7 at a dinner in the Fullerton Marriott Hotel.

Mulville, born in Fullerton, has a long history of community activities and in 1989 was honored by the National Conference of Christians and Jews with its Humanitarian Award.

Hutain, also a Fullerton native, is a Sunday school teacher and active in various community and medical groups. He is a staff member at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton and was named 1990 Man of the Year by the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce.

Edward Lewis, 82, of Costa Mesa and Josephine Marie Hefner, 66, of Garden Grove won second and third place respectively in the FHP Health Care’s Fourth Annual Celebrity Senior contest that honors seniors who help their communities and families.

John A. Serkauskas, 78, of Riverside won first place in the contest. FHP is a health-maintenance group based in Fountain Valley.

A Big Band dance program at the Laguna Hills Mall raised $6,500 for the South Orange County Meals on Wheels program, according to Marilyn Ditty, executive director of South Orange County Senior Services.

The dance, featuring the 18-piece Senior Class Band, was sponsored by Dimension Cable and the American Movie Classics Network.

Chris Brewer, Saddleback College anthropology professor, has been elected to the governing board of the new Orange County chapter of the Archeological Institute of America and was admitted to the National Society of Professional Archeologists.
