A construction worker was left paralyzed Friday after falling 20 feet from a scaffold and suffering a broken back and a fractured skull, fire officials said.

Orange County Fire Capt. Dan Young said Scott Voigts, 30, of El Toro suffered a broken vertebra just below the heart, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.

A hospital spokeswoman at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo declined to comment on Voigts’ injuries. He was listed in serious condition.

The accident happened about 1:45 p.m. in the Portola Hills area, just north of Mission Viejo. Voigts’ co-workers at Miguel Construction Co. said he was on a scaffold when it collapsed, causing him to fall down an embankment, Young said.

Firefighters worked for more than an hour to place Voigts on a back board and load him into a stretcher basket to hoist him up.

Attempts to contact officials of Miguel Construction Co. in Rialto were unsuccessful.
