Garcia, Century Too Much for Costa Mesa

Juan Garcia rushed for 108 yards in 15 carries and scored two touchdowns in Century’s 23-0 victory over Costa Mesa in Pacific Coast League game Friday at Newport Harbor High.

Century (6-1, 2-0) opened the scoring with with 2:04 left in the first quarter when the ball was snapped over the head of Costa Mesa punter Steve Owen, who was forced to fall on it in the end zone for a safety.

Rudy Alvarez returned the ensuing kickoff 38 yards to the Costa Mesa 37-yard line. From there, Garcia carried the ball four times, including three yards for a touchdown that put the Centurions up, 9-0, early in the second quarter. With 1:54 left in the first half, Alvarez returned a punt 85 yards for a 16-0 halftime lead. Garcia scored the final touchdown with 7:44 left in the third quarter.

Costa Mesa (2-4, 0-2) was held to 84 net yards and quarterback Matt Harbor was sacked seven times and lost 44 yards. He completed only six passes out of 22 attempts.

Defensive tackle Ryan Park recovered three fumbles for Costa Mesa.
