CITY SECTION ROUNDUP : Cleveland Stops El Camino Real in Final Seconds to Preserve Win

Cleveland High thwarted El Camino Real inside its 20-yard line at the end of both halves to help the Cavaliers to a 21-13 victory in a Northwest Valley Conference game Friday night at Cleveland.

Cleveland saved its best defensive effort for last. With the Cavaliers clinging to a 21-13 lead, El Camino Real drove to the Cleveland 15-yard line. But Cleveland stopped El Camino Real on downs with 17 seconds to play.

The Conquistadores (2-5, 0-4) had trimmed Cleveland’s lead to 14-13 with 10 minutes 44 seconds left on a five-yard run by Victor Sykes, but Evan Howland’s two-point conversion pass was incomplete.

Cleveland (2-3-1, 1-2-1) scored on its ensuing possession, driving 65 yards in 12 plays--capped by Coron Lewis’ three-yard run. Lewis’ run was set up by a 27-yard pass from Jacque Jenkins to Andre Arnold on a fourth-and-20 play from the El Camino Real 30.

Cleveland had taken a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter on Lewis’ 80-yard punt return. Jenkins ran 52 yards on a keeper for the Cavaliers’ first score.

Howland completed nine of 19 passes for 112 yards. El Camino Real’s Richard Gill gained 76 yards in 10 carries and caught three passes for 36 yards.
