Dying Father Was Callously Treated

Re “Felony Abuse Charged in Father’s Death” (Oct. 22): I am hard-pressed to imagine the agony Robert Heitzman must have felt when he called out to his adult sons and daughter for help, only to be neglected and abused.
And when he was found lying in his own waste, the only explanation his sons could offer was that they believed a nursing home would cost too much and were afraid that medical care would eliminate their father’s veterans’ benefits and Social Security income.
Where does such a depth of callousness come from?
