El Cajon
A car being driven by the No. 1 tennis player at Grossmont High School ran off the road late Friday, killing two 16-year-old girls after it struck a fire hydrant and tree in El Cajon, police said.
Stacey Linda Kent, who had excelled in tennis at the El Cajon school, died at 9:54 p.m. Friday at UC San Diego Medical Center, about an hour and a half after the accident occurred, police said.
Julie Lynn Callery, her passenger and Grossmont High classmate, died at 12:18 a.m. Saturday at Sharp Memorial Hospital, said John Armendariz, spokesman for the San Diego County Medical Examiner.
Neither girl was wearing a seat belt, Armendariz said.
The accident occurred in the 300 block of Aldwych Road, where the Isuzu sedan skidded across the road, struck a hydrant and then a tree, causing what investigators said was a 26-inch gouge on the passenger side.
Stacey Kent lived with her parents, Colin and Bonnie Kent, in the 1100 block of Nidrah Street in El Cajon.
Julie Callery lived with her parents, Steve and Carolyn Callery, in the 2000 block of Windmill View Road in El Cajon.
