WEST ROUNDUP : Top-Ranked Nevada Slips By Boise State

Nevada’s George Buddy blocked Mike Black’s 41-yard field-goal attempt with no time remaining to preserve the top-ranked Wolf Pack’s 17-14 victory over No. 10 Boise State in a Division I-AA showdown Saturday night at Reno.

Rick Schwendinger’s 34-yard field goal eight seconds into the fourth quarter gave Nevada a 10-7 lead. The Wolf Pack (8-0) expanded the lead to 17-7 on Paul Jackson’s end zone recovery of a muffed punt return with 9:11 left in the game.

Boise State (5-2) closed to 17-14 with 5:20 left in the game on Travis Stuart’s eight-yard run on fourth down.

The Broncos got the ball back with 1:37 remaining and drove 56 yards to Nevada’s 24 before attempting a field goal that would have forced overtime.

The Big Sky Conference game drew a Mackay Stadium-record crowd of 27,668.

Sonoma State 35, Humboldt State 0--Quarterback John Spear completed 21 of 32 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns as the Cossacks shut out the Lumberjacks at Arcata, Calif.

Sonoma State’s defense had eight sacks of three Lumberjack quarterbacks for losses of 59 yards.

Sonoma State led only 7-0 after a missed field goal and a fumble stopped two drives.

The victory gives Sonoma State an overall record of 6-2 and a Northern California Athletic Conference record of 2-0. Humboldt State fell 4-4 and 0-2.

Hayward State 17, San Francisco State 32--The Gators pulled away to an NCAC victory in the second half at San Francisco.

The first half ended with the score 3-3.

Gator quarterback Tres Sullivan, who has now completed 73 straight passes without an interception, was nine of 13 for 195 yards and two touchdowns.

San Francisco State tailback Richard Parker went over the century mark for the fourth consecutive game, rushing for 126 yards and a touchdown in 26 carries. Chad Zeigler had four receptions for 115 yards and two touchdowns.

The Gators are now 3-4 and 2-2, the Pioneers 2-5 and 0-2.
