Car Deal for Flights to Germany

Two economy-class passengers flying round trip together on Lufthansa from the United States to Germany or Austria can get a complimentary Avis rental car for one week, beginning Friday and extending through March 31, 1992. First- and business-class passengers may fly alone and still qualify for the car.

The offer is good on virtually all of the airline’s fares, including its nonrefundable fare.

Travelers can pick up the cars either at the airport or at downtown stations in 12 German cities--Frankfurt, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Bonn, Bremen, Hannover, Nuremberg, Stuttgart and Saarbrucken. The offer includes unlimited mileage and the value-added tax.

In Austria, the rental cars can be picked up in Vienna, Graz, Salzburg and Linz.

There is no drop-off charge for returning a car to a different city than where it was picked up, as long as it’s in the same country.

Lufthansa will make the car reservation, which has to be booked at least two weeks before departure from the United States.

Lufthansa is also offering its transatlantic passengers, in any class of service, a discounted GermanRail pass that allows travelers to choose any five days of unlimited rail travel on the German rail system during a one-month period. This offer is also good beginning Friday and continuing through March 31.

Bookings for the rail pass have to be made directly with GermanRail at least two weeks beforedeparture, though Lufthansa will provide travelers with an order form. The rail pass will be mailed prior to departure.

Lufthansa offers the rail pass for $105 for first-class travel, down from the 1991 rate of $190 and the 1992 rate of $240. The second-class pass costs $49, a savings from the 1991 rate of $130 and the 1992 rate of $160.
