Bowe Declared Winner After Foe Gets Kicks
Heavyweight Riddick Bowe was declared the winner Tuesday night when his opponent, Elijah Tillery, was disqualified for kicking Bowe at the end of the first round.
As the bell rang ending the round, Tillery and Bowe exchanged punches and Tillery then kicked Bowe in the shin as Bowe began to move away. When Bowe moved in to retaliate, Tillery kicked him in the backside, and then, as the ring filled with handlers and onlookers, Bowe toppled Tillery over the ropes and onto a press table.
It took fight officials and District of Columbia police almost 10 minutes to restore order.
After the fighters had left the arena, referee Karl Milligan declared Bowe the winner.
Bowe (26-0) is ranked second by the World Boxing Council.
