From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A man accused in a series of sex-torture killings lost a bid to change his defense attorneys three weeks before he is to enter a plea to 11 counts of murder. Charles Ng, 30, wanted to keep the two lawyers originally appointed to represent him, Michael Burt and Garrick Lew. But Calaveras County Judge Douglas Mewhinney said Burt has two other death penalty cases to handle, and Lew has never tried a capital case before. Thomas Marovich and James Webster were appointed later to represent Ng.
