Ayrton Senna won a chaotic Australian Grand Prix today at Adelaide when the race had to be abandoned after torrential rain caused a series of wild crashes.
Officials halted the race after only 17 of the scheduled 81 laps and abandoned it an hour later as rain continued to fall heavily. Under the rules, the standings after 14 laps were adapted as the official result.
Nigel Mansell of Britain, who crashed heavily on the 16th lap, was given second place in his Williams-Renault, ahead of Gerhard Berger of Austria in the second McLaren-Honda.
