An 87-year-old man was killed during the weekend when the car in which he was riding was broadsided at a Van Nuys intersection, Los Angeles police said.

Two people were injured in the collision Saturday evening that killed Thomas Napoli at Van Nuys Boulevard and Vanowen Street, Sgt. Mel Cunningham said.

Napoli was a passenger in a car driven by Frank Cafiero, 85, of Van Nuys, who was heading south on Van Nuys Boulevard. As Cafiero turned left onto Vanowen, a northbound car driven by Masuda Khawajanizan, 22, of Northridge slammed into the right side of Cafiero’s car, Cunningham said.

Napoli died at a nearby hospital about 30 minutes after the accident. Cafiero was in serious condition at Valley Presbyterian Hospital, and Khawajanizan was in stable condition at Sherman Oaks Community Hospital.

Cunningham said the accident is under investigation, but that neither driver was cited.
