El Pollo Loco is finding some new uses for its charbroiled chicken.

The Irvine-based restaurant chain has expanded its menu by offering sandwiches. Until now, El Pollo had pretty much limited itself to chicken, burritos and side dishes.

The three chicken sandwiches will sell for $2.79 each and come with a variety of toppings: honey mustard sauce, jack cheese and salsa dressing, and a teriyaki glaze. El Pollo Loco hopes the new menu items will help the 209-unit chain capture a larger share of the lunch business.

“We’ve been testing these new flame-broiled chicken sandwiches in selected locations and the response has been very positive,” said Norman McKinnon, director of marketing.
