COUNTYWIDE : Air Quality Prompts Health Warning
Air pollution officials called a health warning Thursday for Simi Valley, Moorpark and Ojai, cautioning schools to curtail outdoor sports and hospitals to keep the infirm indoors. It was the sixth such warning in the county this year.
County Air Pollution Control District meteorologist Kent Field said slightly cooler temperatures today will reduce smog slightly, bringing it under the level at which warnings must be issued but leaving the air in the unhealthful category in inland valleys.
On Thursday, temperatures that surged into the high 80s in inland areas and stagnant air trapped by a low inversion layer produced unhealthful levels of ozone, the primary constituent of smog, officials said.
Ozone, a gas created when pollutants from cars and industrial sources mix together in sunlight, can harm lungs and is being studied for a possible link to lung cancer.
