Countywide : Patriotic Salutes to Mark Veterans Day

Over Veterans Day weekend, Ventura County residents will salute those who served in the U.S. armed forces with a ceremony at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and a visit from a replica of the Vietnam War Memorial.

The weekend will begin with a parade in Fillmore today at 3 p.m., followed by a barbecue and dance at 6 p.m. in the Fillmore Memorial Building.

On Sunday, veterans and former prisoners of war will gather outside the County Government Center in Ventura at 11:30 a.m. to open a six-day viewing of the memorial wall.

Rep. Robert J. Lagomarsino (R-Ventura) will speak at the opening of the half-scale model, which is inscribed with the 58,185 names of those who died during the conflict.

The Ventura County Concert Band will play patriotic music at Ventura High School beginning at 3 p.m. in the auditorium.

On Veterans Day, Monday, ceremonies will be held throughout the county:

In Oxnard, a parade will begin at Plaza Park at 1 p.m., and city officials will dedicate an unfinished war memorial at the park at 2 p.m. Lagomarsino and Sen. John Seymour are expected to be guest speakers at the ceremony.

American Legion Post No. 502 in Moorpark will raise a new flag and place a memorial wreath at the corner of Moorpark and Los Angeles avenues at 10:30 a.m.

In Santa Paula, veterans groups will sponsor a breakfast starting at 7:30 a.m. at the Santa Paula Community Center. All veterans eat free. At 10:30 a.m., a memorial service will be held at the Santa Paula Veterans Memorial in Civic Center Park.

Also on Monday, officials of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and the Conejo Chapter of the Military Order of World Wars will sponsor a ceremony at the newly opened library in Simi Valley.

The colors will be raised at 9:45 a.m., followed by a ceremony featuring local officials.

After the ceremony, the library museum will be open.

Public schools, banks, the post office and most government agencies will be closed on Monday. County offices will remain open. The Municipal and Superior courts will be closed.
