San Gabriel : Panel to Look at Finances
Two outspoken opponents of a stalled redevelopment effort were named Tuesday to a residents’ advisory committee that will look for sources of money for the deficit-plagued city.
Each of the five City Council members named a resident to the panel, which was suggested last month as a way to help ease opposition to redevelopment, while considering alternative revenue sources.
Mayor Sabino M. Cici, who said the committee was appointed “just to get rid of a problem,” named Catherine Whitesell, a leader among Valley Boulevard-area residents who oppose redevelopment study plans because they think that such improvements would erase their neighborhoods.
Councilman James Castaneda chose Josephine Elizondo, also a critic of plans to study the city’s main commercial strips for possible redevelopment.
Others named to the panel were Theodore Palmeri, Eric Donnelly and James Mass.
