SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

No lyin’--it got away.

Two tranquilizer darts, three sheriff’s deputies, two animal control officers and two fish and game wardens failed to capture a 120-pound mountain lion seen at a Fillmore mobile home park Saturday morning.

The animal was “just cruising on through the park” before it decided to go to sleep behind someone’s shed, said Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputy David Williams.

County animal control officers were called and arrived with a tranquilizer gun.

But it wasn’t that simple, said Deputy Paul Glanville, who was at the park.

“He was sleeping, but when it got hit with a tranquilizer gun, it got up and ran.”

Authorities chased the lion on foot, but it was too fast, Glanville said.

“It looked like it was in great condition.”

The lion fled the mobile home park in east Fillmore, crossed California 126 and was last seen climbing the foothills near Fillmore, headed for the backcountry, Glanville said.
