COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UCI Men Win in Overtime in Basketball Exhibition

Gerald McDonald scored 27 points, making 16 of 19 free throws, to lead UC Irvine to a 100-92 overtime victory Saturday in an exhibition against the Lafayette Hustlers at the Bren Center.
McDonald, who had 11 assists, had five points in overtime as Irvine outscored Lafayette, 11-3.
McDonald, Irvine’s point guard, is the leading returning scorer from an 11-19 team but averaged only 8.4 points last season. He did not start the exhibition because he had been late for a team meeting.
Jeff Von Lutzow added 16 points. Elgin Rogers, a senior competing with sophomore Khari Johnson for a starting position, had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Johnson had nine points and 11 rebounds.
Irvine made 54% of its shots, including nine of 16 from three-point range.
Lafayette was led by former Purdue player Steve Reid, who had 19 points.
In another men’s college basketball exhibition game:
Cal State Fullerton 114, Victoria (Canada) 69--Forward Agee Ward scored 28 points and guard Joe Small added 22 as the Titans won at Titan Gym.
Victoria’s Tom Johnson had a game-high 32 points, but the Titans led, 53-28, at halftime.
Ward had six points during a 14-0 run to start the second half.
The Titans led by at least 36 for the rest of the game and held a 108-57 edge with 3:42 left before Johnson scored seven points during an 11-0 run.
Bruce Bowen had 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for Fullerton. Sean Williams came off the bench to hit seven of eight shots, finishing with 14 points.
Fullerton hit 49 of 95 shots (51.5%). The Titans held wide leads in rebounding (48-22) and assists (22-7). Victoria had 25 turnovers to Fullerton’s 14.
In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:
Pacific 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--The Titans string of futility against Pacific continued with a 15-13, 15-3, 15-6 loss to the third-ranked Tigers at Titan Gym.
Fullerton (6-25, 1-12) has lost 13 consecutive matches, is 0-16 against Pacific (19-4, 14-2) and 0-9 against Top 20 teams this season.
Becky Howlett had a match-high 12 kills for the Titans. Heather Schoeny, a Capistrano Valley High graduate, had 11 kills for Pacific.
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s volleyball:
Chapman 3, UC Riverside 2--Playing in her final home game, Debi Waller’s 14 kills led the Panthers (20-15, 7-3) to a 10-15, 9-15, 15-9, 15-8, 15-3 victory. Riverside is 22-9, 8-2.
In nonconference women’s swimming:
Irvine Still Unbeaten--The UC Irvine women defeated Cal State Hayward, 153-52, and Cal State Bakersfield, 123-101, to improve to 3-0. Laurel Hooper won the 500 freestyle and anchored the winning 400 freestyle relay for Irvine.
In nonconference men’s swimming:
Irvine Splits--The UC Irvine men’s swim team split a double-dual meet in its season opener, defeating Cal State Hayward, 177-45, but losing the Cal State Bakersfield, 147-90. Greg Dovidio was Irvine’s lone double winner, in one- and three-meter diving.
