BACKGROUND: In October, the double identity of Forrest Carter, the late author of “The Education of Little Tree,” was revealed. His autobiography purported to relate Carter’s rural boyhood as an orphan reared by Cherokee grandparents. His widow has verified that Carter was Asa (Ace) Carter, a white supremacist and speech writer for Alabama Gov. George Wallace.
UPDATE: Today’s New York Times Book Review is shifting “Little Tree” from its 19-week perch on the nonfiction list to its fiction list. “We’ve never had to make this kind of call before,” says Book Review Editor Rebecca Sinkler. University of New Mexico Press director Eleanor Hadas says the next printing will reflect Carter’s true identity. So far, she adds, the news hasn’t hurt book sales.
