About 300 Greenpeace protesters and war veterans demonstrated Sunday, demanding a stop to underground nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site.

Thirty-five people were arrested for trespassing, held at the site and released, said Derek Scammell, spokesman for the Department of Energy.

Demonstrators, including a handful of Vietnam and World War II veterans, carried large banners that said: “Stop Nuclear Testing.”

The protest lasted about two hours, Scammell said.

Seven underground explosions have occurred this year at the 1,350-square-mile facility. Twelve nuclear warheads were detonated at the site last year, Scammell said.

The Nevada Test Site is 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
