James Patrick Maloney III; Writer

A memorial service is scheduled Saturday for advertising and free-lance writer James Patrick Maloney III.

Maloney, of Glendale, died of cancer on Oct. 30 at age 39 in a Duarte hospital, said his wife, Lisa Maloney.

Born in Steubenville, Ohio, Maloney graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1974 and worked as a writer and producer for Ketchum Advertising and WQED public television in Pittsburgh.

In 1984, he came to Los Angeles where he worked in production and promotions for Paramount Pictures Corp., ABC-TV and the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach. Maloney was also an associate editor of Music Connection magazine in the mid- to late-1980s and was an advertising writer for Warner Bros. Records. Most recently, he did free-lance writing in advertising and promotions for the A&M;, Capitol and Epic record companies.

In addition to his wife of three years, Maloney is survived by a son, James Patrick Maloney IV of Glendale; parents, James P. and Mary A. Maloney of Allison Park, Pa.; brothers, Michael Maloney, John Maloney and Patrick Maloney, all of Allison Park; and sisters, Meg Maloney Watters of Hampton, Pa., Barbara Maloney of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Erin Maloney of Allison Park.

Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Pittsburgh. A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Incarnation, 1001 N. Brand Blvd. in Glendale. Donations can be made in Maloney’s name to the City of Hope National Medical Center, 1500 E. Duarte Road, Duarte 91010.
