Palmdale Parolee Gets 7 Years for Assault

A Palmdale parolee who knocked down a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy while trying to flee in a stolen car was sentenced Tuesday to seven years in state prison for assault with a deadly weapon.

Lancaster Superior Court Judge Charles Horan imposed the sentence on Garlon G. Robinson, 29, who was shot four times by Deputy Jeff Gleason during their struggle July 19 in Lancaster. The deputy suffered only minor injuries.

Robinson had fled on foot from deputies who were trying to arrest him on other charges. Gleason was hit and dragged about 10 feet by the open driver’s side door of a car Robinson was trying to steal. The deputy fired two shots then and six more after he was left sprawled in the street.

Robinson originally was charged with attempted murder, assault on a peace officer and grand theft auto. But prosecutors agreed to dismiss those charges in exchange for Robinson pleading guilty last month to the assault charge.
