From Staff and Wire Reports

The New York Mets have contacted the agent for Wally Joyner of the Angels. Barry Axelrod said that Met General Manager Al Harazin called to arrange additional talks.

“We didn’t really get into any numbers,” Axelrod said from his Encinitas office. “We were sorting it out, setting some meetings.”

Angel executives will meet next week in Anaheim with owners Gene and Jackie Autry to determined the club’s approach to the free-agent market. Senior Vice President Whitey Herzog discounted reports that the Angels are interested in Dodger pitcher Orel Hershiser. “It’s not that we don’t like Orel Hershiser, but right now, we have more important areas to consider,” Herzog said.

Herzog said the Angels will meet next week with Dennis Gilbert, who represents Bobby Bonilla of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Danny Tartabull of the Kansas City Royals.
