Monterey Park : Mini-Mall Given Exemption

Share

The City Council voted to exempt a mini-mall built on a slope from height limits on business signs.

The council voted 4 to 1, with Mayor Betty Couch opposed, to let owners of the three-story Landmark Center on North Atlantic Boulevard erect two wall signs that are higher than the limits of 15 feet, or one story, provided in a 1990 amendment to the city building code.

Owner Edfundo Tando said the slope makes it impossible for additional signs to comply with the one-story height limit, since part of the story is underground.

Height rules are a sensitive issue in Monterey Park. Earlier this year, residents supporting slow growth questioned the council’s decision to exempt a church steeple from voter-imposed height limits.
