Long Beach Man Honored for Ocean Rescue
A 22-year-old Long Beach resident who rescued an exhausted man from the heavy Pacific Ocean surf last year has been recognized for heroism by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission.
Tyrone W. Dunn, who made the rescue June 12, 1990, was among 14 people recognized recently by the Pittsburgh-based organization.
Each Carnegie hero, or their survivors, receives $2,500, a certificate and a medal.
Other Californians who were honored:
* Judith H. Jonas, 44, of Burbank, who forced her way into a group of youths beating and kicking a helpless 16-year-old boy. She injured her back and head April 19, 1989, while stopping the attack.
* Wilbur J. Witzel, 42, of San Jose, who pulled a fallen woman from railroad tracks June 11, 1990, as a commuter train approached at a high rate of speed.
The commission has honored 7,589 people in the United States and Canada since its founding in 1904 by Pittsburgh industrialist Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie heroes are recognized for trying to save the lives of others while risking their own.
