A judge on Wednesday denied a 61-year-old woman’s petition to withdraw her guilty plea to a charge of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of her husband.

Saying she didn’t completely understand the implications of her plea and that she received inadequate representation, Lisa Marie Herrmann of Paradise Hills asked Superior Court Judge Frederic Link to order a trial in her case.

Although Herrmann had many complaints about her former defense attorney, she acknowledged that she was not coerced into making her plea.

Link refused to rescind her guilty plea as he noted that plea bargains are by nature a compromise.

“At no time was there any evidence that at any time did the defendant do anything she did not intend to do,” Link said.

Herrmann pleaded guilty Aug. 19 to voluntary manslaughter in a plea bargain that guaranteed she would face a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Herrmann admitted shooting to death her 61-year-old husband, Hubert H. Herrmann, at the couple’s home April 2. Hubert Herrmann had taught for several years at San Diego State University.

Link scheduled a sentencing hearing for Dec. 5.
