James S. Cline; Attorney

Attorney James S. Cline, who specialized in insurance litigation, has died at a Los Angeles hospital. He was 64.

A longtime Studio City resident, Cline died Sunday of cancer, said his son, Charles Cline of Sherman Oaks.

Born in Los Angeles, Cline graduated from Hollywood High School in 1944 and served in the U.S. Navy. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1948 and a law degree in 1952, both from UC Berkeley. After his graduation from law school, Cline began working as an attorney for Adams, Duque & Hazeltine in Los Angeles and later became a partner with the firm. A member of the American Bar Assn., he practiced law until his death.

In addition to his son Charles, Cline is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary Cline; sons James Cline of La Canada-Flintridge, Frederic Cline of Sonoma, Calif., Michael Cline of El Verano, Calif., Matthew Cline of Sonoma, Gary Cline of Santa Rosa; daughters, Valerie Porter of Oakhurst, Calif., Mia Keenan of Portland, Ore., and Maria Cline of Shadow Hills; sister, Janice Thompson of Indianapolis, Ind.; and 15 grandchildren.

A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 10828 Moorpark St., in North Hollywood. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park in the Hollywod Hills. Forest Lawn Mortuary, Hollywood Hills, is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Cline’s name to the Kenneth Norris Jr. Cancer Hospital, 1441 Eastlake Ave., Los Angeles 90033.
