Clearing the way for a much-ballyhooed endeavor to produce energy through fusion reaction, the Board of Regents of the University of California on Friday approved UC San Diego’s role in assisting with the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor.

Under the proposed agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy, UCSD will provide staff and facilities to help develop a design for the experimental thermonuclear reactor--a project that is expected to take six years.

“The University welcomes the opportunity to participate and assist in the operation of the ITER project,” UCSD Chancellor Richard Atkinson said.

Science Applications International Corp. will provide most of the facilities, equipment and staff to assist in the project, an endeavor that is expected to bring 250 international scientists to San Diego.

Paul-Henri Rebut, a European scientist credited with leading a team that produced unusually large amounts of energy a week ago, has been named a “likely nominee” to head the ITER project.
