University High Takes 1st Place in Quiz Part of Academic Decathlon

University High School of West Los Angeles took first place Saturday in the Super Quiz portion of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Academic Decathlon.

The Super Quiz was the culmination of a daylong series of tests in six subjects that involved 504 students on teams representing 56 high schools.

The winner of the quiz does not always take the overall title, which will be announced later this week. University won the quiz last year but placed third overall.

Three schools from the San Fernando Valley took second, third and fourth place, respectively. They were El Camino High School from Woodland Hills, Taft High School from Woodland Hills and Van Nuys High School.

The winner of the Los Angeles County Super Quiz competition was West High School of Torrance, which placed first among 69 schools. William S. Hart from Saugus-Newhall came in second and Wilson High School from Hacienda La Puente came in third.

The theme of the two-hour, multiple-choice Super Quiz was ecology and the environment.
