Long Beach : Another $1.9 Million OKd to Repair Trash Incinerator
The City Council has authorized another $1.9 million in repairs for Long Beach’s trash-to-energy incinerator, pushing the total repair bill to nearly $12 million for the 3-year-old plant.
The money has been taken primarily from leftover construction funds, which will soon be exhausted. City officials say the most pressing repairs at the Terminal Island plant are being taken care of, but work on less serious deficiencies will have to be deferred. Nonetheless, plant managers expect to obtain an operating permit from the South Coast Air Quality Management District by the first of the year.
Known as the Southeast Resource Recovery Facility, the plant was troubled by malfunctions after it first opened, prompting the city to sue the company that built the incinerator, Dravo Corp. of Pennsylvania. The city claims that Dravo never finished the job it contracted to do, a charge that Dravo denies. If the city wins the lawsuit, it could recover some $50 million.
