A Costa Mesa carpenter was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison Wednesday for slamming into two cars while drunk, killing two people and injuring seven others.

Brian A. Klamm, 28, who pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter for the July 17, 1990, wreck, has completed an alcohol rehabilitation program that included speeches to high school students about the dangers of drinking.

His lawyer, Lloyd L. Freeberg Jr., pointed to Klamm’s participation in that program in asking Superior Court Judge Myron S. Brown for a more lenient sentence than the seven-year maximum Klamm faced.

Klamm had been driving 70 m.p.h. with a suspended license and no insurance when the crash occurred on Wilson Street west of College Avenue in Costa Mesa.
