Man Gets 30 Days for Beating His Puppy

A man who pleaded guilty to charges that he beat his 8-month-old Cocker Spaniel puppy on the balcony of his Glendale apartment was sentenced Wednesday to serve 30 days in jail, perform 100 hours of community service at an animal shelter and three years’ probation.

During his probation, Brendan Sheen, 26, cannot own or possess any pets, Pasadena Superior Court Judge Terry Smerling ruled. Sheen also must pay restitution to the Collett Veterinary Clinic in Sylmar, which has been treating the dog, “Baby,” for three broken ribs and a broken pelvis. Smerling instructed Dr. Robert Collett, the veterinarian, to place the dog in a new home.

The June 30 dog-beating arrest triggered widespread outrage among animal advocates and helped the Doris Day Pet Foundation raise more than $10,000 to care for ill or injured animals.
