From Staff and Wire Reports

Vernon Forrest became the second U.S. finalist in the World Amateur Boxing Championships at Sydney, Australia, Wednesday when Cuban Candelario Duvergel delivered a low blow and was penalized.

The Cubans still have the most finalists, six, and the U.S. team has two, one more than it had in the last World Championships at Moscow in 1989.

Forrest, 20, of Augusta, Ga., joined teammate Eric Griffin in the finals when Duvergel was disqualified for a low blow in the first minute of their 139-pound semifinal bout.

Griffin, a gold medalist in 1989, will fight Ernesto Marcelo of Cuba in the 106-pound final Friday night. Forrest’s opponent Saturday night will be Konstantin Tszyu of the Soviet Union.

The only other U.S. boxer to reach the semifinals, super-heavyweight Larry Donald of Cincinnati, had to settle for a bronze medal when a last-minute rally by Svilen Russinoff gave the Bulgarian a 19-17 victory.

The Soviet Union placed five boxers in the finals. Germany and Bulgaria each placed three.
