Malibu : Panel Rejects Land Request
A Los Angeles County commission has rejected Malibu’s bid to extend its sphere of influence to the ridgeline of the Santa Monica Mountains, saying the city should first complete a general plan.
Designating a sphere of influence is the first step toward eventual annexation.
City officials were not surprised by last week’s decision by the Local Agency Formation Commission, and they said they intend to renew the request once the city adopts a general plan, which is a blueprint for development.
Citing common traffic, fire and environmental concerns, Malibu officials had sought to extend the sphere of influence to include the area covered by a land-use plan approved by the county in 1986. The city’s boundaries now cover an area about 20 miles long and a mile wide.
