The City Council is pushing ahead with plans for a major rehabilitation of the historic War Memorial Building and expansion of the Senior Citizens Center.

In two unanimous votes, the council last week authorized city staff to solicit bids for construction on the two facilities.

The War Memorial Building at 435 Fair Oaks Ave. is scheduled for several phases of restoration over the next few years.

The council approved solicitation of bids for the first phase, which is the rehabilitation of the landmark’s interior, expected to cost about $200,000. The money will come from several state and local funds.

The Senior Citizens Center, located next to the city’s library, will be expanded by about 1,000 square feet to provide up to three new rooms for programs and services.

The expansion will be funded with $165,000 in federal community development block grants.
