Judge’s Sentence Draws Fire

Share

Until now I did not think it was possible to be killed twice. However that is just what happened to 15-year-old Latasha Harlins at the hands of our justice system. A woman who was convicted of voluntary manslaughter was given probation, community service and a $500 fine! This is a slap in the face of every African-American citizen.

When I read the article (Nov. 16) I wept. I cried not only for Latasha Harlins, but for my two children and all African-American children in this city. Judge Joyce A. Karlin has just told us that it is open season on our children.

Judge Karlin said that this is a time for healing and not for revenge when she handed down her sentence. No one asked for revenge; they only asked for justice.
