Earvin (Magic) Johnson Monday officially announced the formation in Inglewood of a charitable foundation to support AIDS education and awareness programs, fund research and assist in caring for those suffering from the disease.

The former Los Angeles Laker superstar announced his retirement on Nov. 7 after learning that he had contracted the virus that causes AIDS. The 32-year-old athlete said he would devote his life to being a spokesman in the fight against the disease.

Johnson said he has asked talk show host Arsenio Hall, Lakers owner Jerry Buss, Chicago Bulls basketball star Michael Jordan and actor Denzel Washington to serve on the Magic Johnson Foundation Board of Directors.
