A 14-year-old girl told police she was kidnaped from the parking lot of a Ventura convenience store by five people, repeatedly raped and then returned to the store’s parking lot 42 hours later, police reported Tuesday.

Although the abduction was said to have occurred Sunday, police said details were still sketchy and the victim had yet to be interviewed by a detective.

The girl told an officer that she was abducted at 1:30 a.m. Sunday from the parking lot of a Stop N’ Go store near Petit Avenue and Telephone Road.

The victim said two men and three women participated in the abduction and drove her “to an unknown location where she was held captive and raped several times,” according to information released by the Ventura Police Department.

The victim said the abductors returned her to the same parking lot at 7:30 p.m. Monday, police said.

Police Lt. Don Arth said the victim was examined at Ventura County Medical Center and released. A nursing supervisor said the results of such examinations are confidential.

The victim told police that she was driven to the store by a friend, and that she had planned to walk home from there. That area is in the eastern end of Ventura, a neighborhood of neat streets and middle-income homes.

“This is one of the better neighborhoods and this is one of our better stores,” said Greg Klein, a Stop N’ Go district sales manager, who stopped by the store Tuesday afternoon.

Maura Hewlett, the store’s manager, recognized many of her customers as she stood behind a cash register Tuesday. She said this was one of the reasons that she liked working there.

“They’re regulars. They all live in the area,” she said.

Hewlett checked with an employee who worked the overnight shift Saturday. Hewlett said the employee reported that he was unaware of any unusual activity near the store early Sunday.

Both Klein and Hewlett said they knew of no gangs operating in the immediate area, but that they were not far from neighborhoods with gang activity.

For example, she said, six months ago “10 gang kids came in here on a beer run,” grabbed cans of beer from a cooler and dashed out.

Police said they are investigating the abduction and have made no arrests. They could not provide an immediate description of the assailants.

Through July, the latest month for which statistics have been compiled, there have been 22 forcible rapes in the city of Ventura, compared with 49 for all of 1990, said Delphine Smith, a police records supervisor.
