World IN BRIEF : ZAIRE : Mobutu Names Foe as Prime Minister
President Mobutu Sese Seko appointed a leading opponent as Zaire’s fifth prime minister this year, but the move rekindled protests in Kinshasa, the riot-torn capital. The main opposition coalition, the Sacred Union, threatened to break off relations with Mobutu after the autocratic leader announced Nguza Karl-I-Bond’s selection. Political analysts said that Mobutu, stripped of international support and fighting for his political survival, is hoping to deepen divisions in the opposition with the appointment.
