COUNTYWIDE : Students Promote Energy Savings

Share

In a campaign to save electricity, school officials and energy experts are betting that a student drawing of a light bulb bedding down for the night will remind teachers and students to turn off classroom lights.

Ventura County’s superintendent of schools, the Central Coast Energy Extension Center and Southern California Edison sponsored a contest for elementary school children to find the best drawings to illustrate the energy conservation theme.

More than 200 children from Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties submitted drawings.

Nine winners were honored Thursday at an awards ceremony.

Seven of the winners were from Ventura County: Kim Garrison of Simi Valley and Poulina Uddin and Tiffany Sutor, both of Ventura, for the fifth- and sixth-grade category; Mindy Mittelman of Simi Valley, Trevor Lokie of Thousand Oaks, and Shelly Thomas of Ventura, third- and fourth-grade category, and Samantha Fowles of Simi Valley, kindergarten through second-grade category.

First-place winners Kim and Mindy will see their work reproduced on stickers distributed to participating schools.

Mindy’s drawing showed a yawning light bulb saying “Good night, light.”

Kim’s artwork was a picture of an eye with the words “Eyes Out for Lights Out.”
