OUTLOOK
Arias takes over the Tiger girls’ team after coaching the freshman boys’ last season. Valencia finished second in the league last season, losing only two games, both to Brea-Olinda. Arias feels optimistic about this season with three returning starters, including Granger (6-2), who averaged 10 points as a junior. But he’s concerned about rebounding and interior defense if Granger gets in foul trouble. With her height, Granger is his only reliable rebounder and inside defender. Forbes and Snadely will have to develop as rebounders. Arias hopes that overall quickness and pressure defense will help compensate for lack of height. Kubota has a good shooting touch both inside and out, and Jones is an outstanding outside shooter, hitting seven three-point baskets in one junior varsity game last season. Arias is optimistic about his backcourt, which boasts four good players. He said Jones and Hwang will make a significant impact. Valencia will probably get off to a slow start, but Arias expects the Tigers to be doing well by the time league play begins.
