A Westminster man was killed early Tuesday when his car slammed into the rear of a trash-hauling big rig, police said.

Larry E. Williams died at the scene of the 5:30 a.m. accident near the intersection of Knott Avenue and Patterson Drive, Garden Grove traffic investigator Mike Clabaugh said.

Clabaugh said the tractor-trailer was pulling out of the CRT Transfer Co. driveway and was completing a left turn when Williams apparently failed to notice that the truck was in his way.

Williams’ car, which was traveling north about 45 m.p.h., struck the rear tires of the trailer, causing severe front-end damage, Clabaugh said. The truck driver was not cited, he added.

Clabaugh said Williams was wearing an automatic shoulder strap.

Williams, who was restricted by the Department of Motor Vehicles from driving during darkness due to poor eyesight, did not apply his brakes before the accident, Clabaugh said.

“There was no evidence of skid marks,” Clabaugh said.
