It was the team with the worst record in the Wales Conference against the team with the best in the Campbell Conference Tuesday night at Quebec.

It was no contest. The lowly Nordiques scored all their goals in the third period to whip the Vancouver Canucks, 3-0.

Joe Sakic scored a goal and assisted on another, and goaltender Ron Tugnutt stopped 26 shots to lead the Nordiques to their fourth victory in their last seven games, but only their eighth victory in 27 games.

Although the Canucks (16-9-3) still have the most points (35) in the conference, they are showing signs of wear and tear. This was their fifth loss in the last seven games and they have been shut out in the last two games.

It was only the third victory in 12 games for Tugnutt, and it was the first shutout of his career. It was the Nordiques’ first shutout in almost four years.

Detroit 5, Calgary 2--Steve Yzerman scored twice in the Red Wings’ four-goal burst in the first period at Detroit.

Yzerman completed his hat trick with an unassisted goal in the third period as the Red Wings stretched their home winning streak to six games.

The Red Wings, 9-1-2 in their last 12 games, increased their lead in the Norris Division to five points over St. Louis.

Minnesota 3, St. Louis 3--The North Stars dominated the first half of the game at Bloomington, Minn., and the Blues the second half, so it seemed only fair they skated to a tie.

Brett Hull scored his league-leading 23rd goal midway through the second period. The Blues then scored two more goals in the period to take the lead.

But defenseman Brian Glynn tied it with seven minutes left in regulation.

Edmonton 5, Pittsburgh 3--Center Craig MacTavish, better known for his defensive work, broke the Penguins’ unbeaten streak at six at Edmonton.

MacTavish scored only his third goal after stealing the puck with 3:37 left in regulation.
