THE PROGRAM: The Los Angeles Police Department has assigned 31 officers to full-time community relations duty in the San Fernando Valley. The officers, who in the past spent only a few hours a month on such duty, now work full-time with neighborhood organizations and individuals. One of the 31 areas is described below:

THE OFFICER: Glen Younger, Foothill Division, (818) 989-8861

THE AREA: Younger’s beat includes some industrial pockets and a few shopping centers but is mainly made up of single-family houses owned by people of all income levels. Residential and auto burglaries are the area’s main problems, Younger says. Gangs are prevalent too, particularly around Sylmar and San Fernando high schools.
