ODDS AND ENDS

Old Acquaintances: Esperanza football Coach Gary Meek and Schurr Coach Ken Davis first met 22 years ago in an all-star game. Meek, a senior at Santa Ana Valley, played for an Orange County all-star team that met an all-star team from Long Beach at Santa Ana Stadium in 1967. One of Meek’s coaches was Davis, who was an assistant at Servite that year. Meek showed Davis he can also coach, leading Esperanza to a 49-7 victory in the Division III semifinals.

Back to the future: After Mater Dei defeated Loyola, 35-21, to advance to the Division I final, Monarch Coach Bruce Rollinson put on his letterman’s jacket from when he played at Mater Dei.

Rollinson was a junior running back in 1965, helping the Monarchs to the Southern Section Major Division title. It was the last time Mater Dei was in a championship game.

In 1966, the Monarchs got to the semifinals, losing to Anaheim.

“I tell you what, we left our guts on that field that night,” Rollinson said.

ON THE RECORD

‘Righetti was playing nine guys on the run, and we knew they couldn’t cover every (receiver). Justin did a great job of getting them the ball.’

--Steve Bresnahan, Laguna Hills coach, on how Hawk quarterback Justin Vedder, who passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, took advantage of Righetti’s attempts to neutralize running back David Webber, in Laguna Hills’ 34-7 victory.
